Described as The Original Paradise, Sri Lanka is one of the largest islands in the Indian Ocean. The smooth blend of history, culture, countryside and wildlife will dazzle and enchant the visitor. Hardly surprising that the word serendipity, the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident, is often ascribed to this paradise island. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa, once the capital of Sri Lanka, was instrumental in the revival of a cultural epoch for art, architecture and engineering.
The sacred city of Anuradhapura was founded in the 5th century BC, and in 247 BC Buddhism was introduced at the mountain monastery of Mihintale. Built in the 5th century AD, the rock fortress of Sigiriya contains celebrated frescoes and the remains of an enormous gallery, which once boasted five hundred portraits. Kandy, last capital of the Sinhala Kings, is a magnificent testament to the past. It is dominated by the Dalada Maligawa, the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with views across Kandy Lake.
